- The Seabee Deposit is located on the peninsula at the northeast end of Laonil Lake or 120 km (74.6 miles) north northeast of Lac La Ronge.
The area underlying the Seabee deposit consists of hornblende gabbro (part of the Laonil Lake gabbro-pyroxenite body) and intruded metasediments and metavolcanics. Mineralization occurs in a series of 070°-trending narrow shear zones which parallel the main foliation in the gabbro. A second set of shear zones trends 140° to 150°. Both sets of shear zones host the auriferous quartz-tourmaline that form the deposit. The pyrite, pyrrhotite, and associated gold mineralization appears to postdate deformation and may be associated with high-grade metamorphism.
After preliminary surface mapping, Claude Resources concluded that the deposit consisted of 9 distinct stratabound zones (2,5,7,13-15,18-20) within metavolcanic- metasedimentary rock sequences. The deposit extends over a strike length greater than 4,000 ft 1219.2 m). Claude felt that the deposit was underlain by a stratified sequence of volcanics and sediments along with sub-volcanic intrusive dykes and sills. Before 1986, the deposit was interpreted as being hosted in several conformable quartz-sulphide-tourmaline flooded sedimentary tuff horizons within a predominantly mafic volcanic sequence. Detailed mapping by Claude Resources suggested that the deposit occurs at the northwest end of the Tabbernor Lake greenstone belt. The property covers a portion of the Laonil metagabbro, a layered complex of parallel igneous intrusive and extrusive ultramafic to felsic rock units that were possibly emplaced contemporaneously with flanking volcanic and sedimentary rocks and which may be a subvolcanic sill complex.
Detailed mapping by G. Delaney of the Saskatchewan Geological Survey and separate mapping by Claude Resources Inc. suggests that the deposit is hosted by the Laonil Lake Intrusive Complex, which in the vicinity of the gold-bearing veins, comprises a series of gabbroic layers or sheets that are cut by and commonly capped by quartz diorite. Ultramafic layered lenses lie at the the base of some of the sheets. Intercalated or rafted within the multiple phase intrusive sequence are variable thick layers, lenses, and xenoliths of mafic material and minor greywacke.
Several stages of deformation have resulted in a series of strike-slip (?) shear zones that parallel these units. the Seabee gold deposits are situated within these shears and are spatially associated with quartz-feldspar porphyry. The gold mineralization occurs in a series of discontinous, elongate quartz-tourmaline veins that plunge 45 to 60° east. The veins are hosted by a series of east northeast trending near vertical shear zones which are characterized by prominent steep west-southwest dipping lineations and intense biotite alteration. The individual shear zones, which are up to 16 m (52.5 ft) wide and 200 m (656.2 ft) long, and the adjacent wallrock hosts narrow sulphide-bearing feldspar porphyry bodies. These shear zones are found adjacent to and parallel with the N70°E trending Laonil Shear Zone, which flanks the north side of the Eyahpaise pluton. The individual veins have been isoclinally folded about an axis that plunges 80°W. Structural relationships indicate that mineralizing events commenced prior to the last major expisode of movement in the shear zones, with the early pre-metamorphic subvolcanic-volcanic emplacement of the felsic porphyries along strike-slip shears (?) within the metagabbro complex, and terminated with a ductile deformation-hydrothermal event during retrograde metamorphism.
The vein mineralization consists of fine-grained pyrite, chalcopyrite and associated minor visible gold. The gold is more abundant as non-visible gold associated with the sulphides. Other minerals present are sphalerite, pyrrhotite, minor arsenopyrite, pentlandite, tellurides, magnetite, barite, molybdenite, sericite and actinolite-tremolite. The gold has been shown to contain less than 1% impurities and metallurgical tests indicate that 90% of the gold is fine-grained and free, and 10% carried in tellurides. A recovery rate greater than 90% can be expected by traditional processing methods.
To date, over 4 miles (6.4 km) of shear systems containing numerous zones have been discovered. They include the 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, 13, 15, 18, 19 and 20 veins. The deposit proper includes only the Veins 2, 5 and the new 161 Zone.
Early in 1949, Cominco reported a assay return of 1.69 oz/ton Au from a trench completed on vein 2. Extensive diamond drilling was completed and the high assay values received during initial delineation drilling are reported below were returned:

More recent drilling by Placer Development Ltd. returned a high assay of 1.76 oz./ ton Au (drill hole S-192).
A 4500 ton bulk sample taken from the 2 Zone confirmed that the deposit grade was the same as reserves data calculated from drill hole assays.
On 21 March 1983, while drilling to test known deposits and showings on the Seabee property, Claude Resources drill hole 267 intersected a new zone of mineralization that was named the 161 Zone. The 161 Zone is located 700 ft (213.4 m) west of the No. 5 Zone/Vein and 800 ft (243.8 m) south of the No. 2 zone/vein. The folded 161 Zone consists of multiple sub-parallel mineralized quartz veins that extend over a strike length of 500 ft (152.4 m). The zone has been drill-tested to a vertical depth of 600 ft (182.9 m). The envelope-shaped zone strikes E-W and dips subvertically. The mineralization and geology of the 161 Zone is identical to that of the No. 2 and 5 veins - 5 to 10% disseminated sulphides hosted within a mafic to intermediate meta-volcanic. The following are some of the better drill intersections encountered during initial delineation of the 161 Zone:

SSR Mining Inc.’s Seabee gold operation, which includes the Santoy underground mine and the Seabee mill
facility, remains the province’s lone gold producer. After achieving five consecutive years of record production at its
Seabee mining operation, SSR was hampered by COVID-19–related setbacks in 2020 and produced 81,686 oz of
gold. Production in 2021 rebounded to another new record of 118,888 oz of gold. In 2022, SSR reported year-end
production totaling 136,125 oz of gold, representing yet another year of record production from the operation. The
company has enough resources to keep the operation in production until at least 2032, with more being discovered
each year.
(Saskatchewan Exploration and Development Highlights 2023, p.4)
The SSR Mining Inc.–owned Seabee gold operation has been in continuous commercial production since
2014 and continues as Saskatchewan’s sole gold producer. The Seabee operation comprises production at the
active Santoy underground mine and ore processing at the Seabee mill facility. The 2022 year-end production for the
operation totaled 136,125 oz of gold, a record high in its 30 years of operation. Through the first two quarters of 2023,
the Seabee operation produced 32,196 oz of gold, compared with 90,923 oz in the first two quarters of 2022. The
2023 lower gold production at Seabee is due to lower grades milled and unplanned maintenance downtime.
(Saskatchewan Exploration and Development Highlights 2023, p.10)
In the La Ronge gold belt area, the Seabee operation focused on exploring a new reserve located at the Gap
Hanging Wall, which extends from the Santoy mine, and continued drilling at the Joker target, which aims to extend
mineralization to the Santoy mine.

12/1/2024
The Seabee gold operation, owned and operated by SSR Mining Inc., has been in continuous commercial production since 1991 and is the sole gold producer in Saskatchewan. Current production comes from the Santoy underground mine and the ore is processed at the Seabee mill facility. The 2023 year-end production totaled 90 777 troy oz of gold. Through the first two quarters of 2024, Seabee produced 40 482 troy oz of gold, compared with 32 196 troy oz in the first two quarters of 2023. This past August, SSR had to temporarily suspend mining operations due to encroaching forest fires, which impacted Seabee's production in the third quarter; mining operations resumed in the second half of October 2024.
SSR continues to explore around the Seabee gold operation at Santoy mine and the Gap Hanging Wall (GHW) aiming to extend the mine life through new reserve growth. A total of 107 233 m of drilling was conducted in 2023, which concentrated on exploration targets and the expansion of mineralized zones. In 2023, underground drilling was focused on the plunge extension of Santoy 8 and 9 veins and in the Santoy 6 area. The Santoy 8 and 9 veins were extended to a vertical depth of $1200 m; gold mineralization in the Santoy 6 area was found to be associated with altered granodiorite dykes. SSR also increased the drillhole density around GHW to improve grade interpolation. At the Porky West deposit, mineralization was defined by surface drilling over a strike of 1400 m and to a vertical depth of 500 m. Additional drilling at the Petunia target identified that this mineralized zone is hosted along the same structure as the Porky West and Porky Main deposits; the estimated total strike length of the structure is thus approximately 2.8 km from northwest (Petunia) to southeast (Porky Main).

7/10/1989 Gold was first discovered at Seabee in 1947 and the showing was staked on November 2, 1947 by B. Corregon. The area was acquired by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (Cominco) in March 1948 as 24 claims. 81 diamond drill holes were completed from 1949 to 1950, most on claims SEABEE 11 and 16 to investigate veins 2, 5, 5A, 6, 11, 13, 14 and 15. Additionally veins 1 and 2 were explored by 11 trenches. The best assay obtained from a trench showed 1.69 oz/ton Au over 20 ft in Trench 10 on Vein 2. The best drill intersection was 18.87 oz/ton Au over 1.8 ft from drill hole 56, from vein 2-13. In 1960, a further 2 holes were drilled (63M12-0002).
In 1972, Cominco undertook an exploration program to discover new quartz veins on the property. Several new veins were located and in 1974 several X-ray drill holes were completed to test these veins.
The deposit was drill-evaluated again by Cominco in 1982-83. No assay results were available to the author.
Claude Resources Inc. acquired a 100% interest in the property from Cominco on 27 April 1984 as SEABEE Claims 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17 and BC Claims 3 and 4 (ML 4781 to 4790 respectively). In 1984, the ore reserves were estimated for the deposit.
An extensive exploration program of infill drilling was completed and bulk sampling and metallurgical studies of all other gold zones on the property commenced. The results of this program have not been reported in assessment work but there are abundant news releases and annual reports available to the public which outline current exploration.
Diamond drilling confirmed two new gold-bearing zones (No. 5 South and No. 2 South) south of two existing zones (Zones 2 and 5). These zones had not been considered in reserve estimates, indicating an increase in reserve potential. A financial evaluation indicated that the Seabee gold deposit is viable and could support a 400 ton per day mining operation with a mine life of eight years (Kilborn Engineering Ltd.). Detailed geological, geophysical and geochemical programs were undertaken to further evaluate the new zones.
In 1985, Placer Development Ltd. entered into a joint venture agreement with Claude resources Inc. to explore the deposit. Under the terms of the agreement, Placer could earn a 55% interest in the property by investing 6.5 million on exploration on the property and bringing the deposit into commercial production. Exploration continued in 1985 with diamond drilling, concentrated on the areas of significant folding near the main orebody to locate new gold-bearing zones similar to zones 2 south and 5 south. $1 million was allocated for exploration in 1985 to carry out geophysical and geochemical surveying, stripping of the known mineralized zones, a minimum of 20,000 ft of diamond drilling and preliminary metallurgical testing (AF 63M12-0041).
This exploration led to the discovery in 1986 of new gold zones on the property. The Boundary Zones lie on the east end of a 2,000 ft (609.6 m) long soil geochemical anomaly and 4,000 ft east of the main No. 2 Seabee gold zone. Drilling indicated five areas of gold mineralization within a zone of shearing up to 300 ft (91.4 m) in width. Two diamond drill holes intersected gold in shears and associated dyke/sill swarms within the metagabbro complex. Visible gold occurs in quartz-sulphide veins as well as sulphide-rich dykes. A high of 1.76 oz./ton Au over 1.7 ft (0.5 m) was returned from drill hole S-192.
Early in 1987 a major exploration program to confirm the grade and internal continuity of the mineralized structures begun. Three million dollars was allocated for a 1000 m (3280.8 ft) decline and lateral development to a depth of 150 m (492.1 ft) which would allow bulk sampling and underground diamond drilling. Site construction began in early April and the decline began shortly after.
In 1987, Placer Development completed an underground exploration program that included 900 m (2952.8 ft) of underground development, bulk sampling and 6,200 m of underground drilling. In 1988, Placer Development terminated the joint venture.
Near the end of 1988, Claude Resources commissioned ACA Howe International Ltd. to complete an ore reserves study on the 2 and 5 zones. Other zones on the property add an additional 1,000,000 tons grading 0.30 oz/ton Au. In the same year, Claude completed 47 drill holes (S-622 to -668) to the west of the minesite on the Currie Rose Option to test the extension of main zone veins 2, 3, and 5 (AF 63M12-0047). This work located significant gold on the 2d structure (Dave Vein).
Late in 1989, Claude commsissioned Cominco Engineering Services Ltd. to study the deposit. 3,960 m of diamond drilling, 300 m of underground development and bulk sampling were completed. Cominco Engineering reported total deposit reserves (all classes) to be 1,140,000 tonnes grading 0.40 oz/ton Au. Between 1988 and 1990, Placer Dome completed drill holes LN89-1 to -22, LS89-1 to -3 and LS90-4 and -5 to test for extensions of the 2, 10, 11, 13, and 20 veins onto adjacent property which had been optioned from Curry Rose Resources (AF 63M12-0040). In 1990, Claude Resources completed 30,000 ft of diamond drilling, 2,000 ft of underground development and a mine feasibility study. A decision to proceed with commercial mining was made. Claude acquired 49% of Mantle Investments. (Prior to the purchase Mantle agreed to provide $22 million for mine development) Claude leased, for a 3 year term, a mill setup from Mantle.
In 1990, mill construction commenced. The mill was expected to have a startup capacity of 440 tons per day. In January of 1991, Claude Resources received government approval to mine the deposit and by February 1991 Claude Resources had received environmental approval for the mining operation. Claude Resources plans to mine using the shrinkage method due to the narrow width of the individual veins containing ore. In 1991, based on a 15% mining dilution, a production rate of 440 t/d and a mill recovery of 95%, Claude Resources estimated a total recovery of 720,000 ounces gold over a mine life that would exceed 10 years. It was planned that the 2 Zone would be first mined from the existing decline to the 320 m level. A second decline would be used to mine the 5 Zone to the 180 m level. Tonto Mining Group was contracted to operate the mine.
Official production commenced 9 November 1991. In this first month, 7,900 tonnes of lower grade surface stockpiled ore was milled to produce 1,465 oz. gold. In December of 1991, 9,000 tons of ore mined from the 60 stope to produce 4,215 oz. gold. To the end of December, recovery rates averaged 90%. The millhead grade of the 60 stope was calculated to be 0.368 oz. (12.6 grams) per tonne Au.
In January 1992, recovery rates reached 95% when the average belt sample grade was 0.4 oz/ton Au. 27 On April 1992, Claude Resources Inc. announced that the 1992 underground mine drilling program at Seabee was complete. 144 drill holes were completed in the B-2 Zone between the 175 and 375 m levels. The remaining proven reserves of the B-2 Zone were given as 70,300 tonnes grading 0.321 oz./ton Au across an average width of 1.72 m. 68 drill holes were completed in the 5-1 Zone between the 70 and 125 m levels. The un-mined zone was found to contain 36,700 tonnes of ore grading 0.391 oz/ton Au across an average width of 1.70 m. At this time, a downwards-revised ore reserves calculation was released by Claude Resources. On 9 November 1991, production commenced at the Seabee Mine. The 400 tpd capacity mill uses a carbon-in-pulp extraction process. In 1992, revised ore reserves figures were released. Between 1994 and 1995, Claude completed drill holes S-474 to S-476 on the tailings pond (called East Lake), drill holes S-477 to -S-480 slightly northwest of the tailings pond, drill holes S-494 and -495 to test the extension of the 5-1 Zone, and drill holes S-485 and -505 on the Scoop grid.
In the winter of 1996, Claude Resources completed drill holes S-525 to S-547 to test the No. 10 Vein West extension on Currie Rose Option CBS 7057 approximately 1350 m east of the mine (AF 63M12-0043). The drilling outlined ore grade intersections in the A, B, and C zones. Holes S-595 to -599, -606, -605 were completed on the 2 and 10 Veins (AF 63M12-0045).
In the 21 July 1997, Northern Miner, Claude Resources (A.C.A. Howe calculation) listed the proven and probable reserves for the deposit.
In October of 1997, a second shaft with a fully automated hoist system commenced operation was sunk (395 m deep). In 1997, the grade of ore mined increased by 35% and underground exploration delineated a number of new zones. Drilling on the adjacent Currie Rose option returned ore grade intersections.
In the 25 January 1999, Northern Miner (p15), revised deposit reserves published. In 1999, mining focused on the 2C Zone , the 2A Zone, and the 2D Zone on Currie Rose property - drill holes S-693 to S-698, S-709 to S-714, and S-719 to S-726 were completed to test portions of the Cut Vein, CHN 2 Vein, and 2, 3, 15, and 20 veins (AF 63M12-0048). In 2000, development work was completed on the 2C and 2D zones.
In the winter of 2000, Claude Resources completed drill holes S-729 to S-749 to test the west extension of the 2 zone (2a, 2c, and 2d), or the mine primary ore structure, immediately east of Bird Lake and to the immediate west of the present mine workings (AF 63M12-0049). Anomalous gold intersections were encountered in many of the holes.
In 2003, the main shaft was extended to the 600 m level and mining of the 2B and 2C zones was completed. A new tailings pond was commissioned and underground exploration drilling was completed.
