- The trenches which expose the Sand Lake Area C Occurrence are located 0.2 mile (0.32 km) northeast of Sand Lake.
The area of the showing is underlain by quartzofeldspathic meta-arkose and semipelitic to pelitic metasediments of the Aphebian Wollaston Group. The Archean granite contact is exposed 0.8 miles (1.3 km) to the north. A major north-northeast lineament, possibly a fault, passes through the area, and extends south to Burr Lake and north to Burd Lake.
Uranium mineralization was noticed and two trenches were blasted 160 ft (48.8 m) apart to expose the showing. Samples returned the following assays:
Trench Sample % U3O8 % ThO2

Trench No. 1 intersected calcareous hornblende pegmatite cutting gossan stained biotite gneiss and containing possible monazite [Ce,La,Nb,Th)(PO4,SiO4)] and abundant scapolite. Mineralization consisted of pitchblende along the main joint surfaces, at intersections of the main joint sets, and along the pegmatite-metasediment contact.
Trench No. 2 exposed pitchblende and yellow uranium stain along with minor pyrite and hematite in fractures, particularly those near the contact of the pegmatite with the surrounding foliated biotite gneiss and siliceous metasediments.
In 1979, Denison re-sampled the trenches. Biotite gneiss samples from Trench 2 all returned <0.005% U3O8. Samples of pegmatitic biotite gneiss from trench 1 returned up to 1.58% U3O8 and showed an average grade of 0.4% U3O8 over 4.0 metres. Samples from trench 2 returned an average of 0.16% U3O8 across 8.0 metres.

- 9/13/1988 In 1969, the Great Plains Development Co. of Canada Ltd. conducted an airborne radiometric survey over its Permit No. 9 in the Upper Foster Lakes area. Follow-up prospecting of anomalous areas revealed uranium mineralization 0.15 to 0.2 miles (0.24 to 0.32 km) northeast of the southeast shore of Sand Lake. Two trenches were blasted and gave the results listed above.
One hole was drilled to a depth of 102 ft (31.1 m) to the east of the trenches in 1970 but intersected nothing of interest.
By 1977, Denison Mines Ltd. had staked the showing area as CBS 4562. Denison completed reconnaissance mapping and prospecting that covered the showing A(F 74A14-0023). In 1978, the showing area was prospected and soil and rock sampled and a ground VLF-EM survey was completed over the showing (AF 74A14-0032).
